Montagu has Excellent Hiking Trails for All Levels of Fitness

  • Walk up to Old English Fort & Plaque in honour of Thomas Bain
    Situated on top of the tunnel in Cogmanskloof to the entrance of Montagu from Ashton’s direction. The fort was declared a monument in 1999.  The Plaque in honour of Thomas Bain –   Engineer and constuctor of Cogmanskloof and tunnel  is situated on the left side of the road directly next to the the tunnel on the Montagu side.
  • Aasvoëlkrans Trail
    Approximately 1½ hours.
  • Bessiekop
    1.2km circular walk in the Nature Garden. Begins and ends behind the tea garden.
  • Bloupunt Trail
    15.6km circular hike – approximately 6 to 9 hours. Begins at Ou Meul.
  • Cogmanskloof Trail
    12.1 km circular hike – approximately 4 to 6 hours.
  • Bad Kloof to Avalon Springs
    2.2kms and begins in Barry Street. A stunning scenic walk through Baths Kloof to the Springs.
  • Nature Garden
    Van Riebeeck Street.  Ideal for bird watching.

The Mountain Biking Around Montagu is Great

From Rose Cottage, you can cycle right out of the property explore the many dirt roads in the area.   Every year Montagu hosts the Montagu Mountain Mania Mountainbike Race and in 2005, the Cape Epic even came trough Montagu. Here is an example of a nice 50km route that takes you up towards the Ouberg Pass and them dips back down into Montagu.

If you are here on a Saturday, you simply MUST check out the market.  Featuring a mix of local craft, plants, fresh produce and much more. This is a wonderful way to spend your Saturday morning in Montagu.
Every Saturday from 8am till noon in Euvrard Park, Bath Street.  You can easily walk from Rose Cottage to the market!
